Situated on the banks of the Orange River, Kakamas is surrounded by fertile vineyards, lucerne and cotton fields. The flourishing settlement has well preserved artifacts of its rich history and struggle for agricultural survival in harsh climatic conditions. Although criticised for their building methods used in the past, the well constructed irrigation canals feeding water from the Gariep to the lands are still in use today.
